3. What happened to Verdoux's (real) wife and child? - MovieChat
I think Verdoux actually murdered his wife and child, probably using the same chemical compound he had unsuccessfully tried on Annabella Bonheur.
In the film MONSIEUR VERDOUX, in the bittersweet scene where Verdoux is briefly reunited with the Girl just before he is finally caught by the police, he reveals to her that he has just "lost" his wife and child. When she expresses sympathy, he reassures her that "they are in a much better place". All this implies of course that his wife and child have died, but for a long time since I first saw that movie, I had wondered how. Since we know he went bankrupt, I thought perhaps they simply died of starvation or malnutrition or illness (after all, the woman obviously suffered from polio and required expensive medication). But when I recently saw the film again with a friend, a solution hit me like a ton of bricks when we came to Verdoux's final dialogue with the Girl. Although I believe Chaplin only hinted at it because he didn't want his audience to lose any sympathy for his protagonist, or because of the problems he had with the censors, I think Verdoux actually murdered his wife and child, probably using the same chemical compound he had unsuccessfully tried on Annabella Bonheur. Here are the possible clues: 1) he had vowed to his wife during his first scene with her and their child that he would never allow them to live under straitened circumstances. Although he said it quietly, there was an underlying intensity that left the impression he meant it. 2) Verdoux knew that the chemical he had created worked painlessly without a trace, hav...
